Die New Ground Performance, später umbenannt in New Ground Ensemble, entstand 2020 aus der Notwendigkeit kulturellen Zusammenhalts angesichts sozialer und politischer Herausforderungen. Das war letztlich der Schlüssel für die Gründung des Kollektivs, das sich zu einem internationalen Ensemble entwickelt hat. Es folgt der Erkundung der Evolution und der menschlichen Bedingung und ihrer Notwendigkeit. Kanalisiert werden zwischenmenschliche Energien, um Gemeinschaft zu stiften.
Initiiert vom bildenden Künstler und Musiker Frank Campoi, basierte die Zusammenarbeit anfänglich auf digitalen Kollaborationen mit Johannes Frericks (Bildender Künstler & Musiker) und der Schauspielerin Julia Dorothee Brunsch (Performance & Gesang). Textfragmente aus Esther Leslies „Synthetic Worlds“ bildeten die Grundlage für eine Klang-, Text und Bildperformance, die experimentelle Industrial Sounds mit Wort und Bild verband. Förderungen der Erwin und Gisela Steiner Stiftung und des Musikfonds ermöglichten ab 2021 die Anschaffung von Equipment und erste physische Proben im alten Berliner Funkhaus. Mit Erla Svanlaug-Riedel (Live Bild Gestaltung & Steuerung) erweiterte sich das Ensemble, das im Juni 2022 sein Debüt im Berliner Delphi Theater feierte und seither zahlreiche Auftritte absolvierte. 2023 stieß die kalifornische Musikerin Hazel Iris hinzu. Die Transformation zur New Ground Ensemble 2024 markierte den Eintritt weiterer Künstler*innen: Esma und Murat Ertel (BaBa ZuLa) aus Istanbul und Hans-Joachim Irmler (Mitbegründer der Gruppe Faust & Klangbad Festival).
Die internationale Besetzung und die Verschmelzung verschiedener Kunstspaten unterstreichen die globale Relevanz der Themen und die Bedeutung des kulturellen Austauschs, die im Kern der Ensemble-Idee liegen. Die Performances zeichnen sich durch eine multisensorische Erfahrung im öffentlichen Raum aus, die zwischenmenschliche Energien kanalisiert und Gemeinschaft stiftet.
2025 trifft Frank Campoi die aus Kiew stammende Künstlerin Ksenia Hnylytska während einer Künstlerresidenz (Halle 6) in München. Mit dem Schwerpunkt auf Performance und Malerei schließt sie sich dem New Ground Ensemble an. Ksenia ist Teil der ukrainischen Künstlergruppe Revolutionary Experimental Space (R.E.P.), die 2004 während der "Orangenen Revolution" in der Ukraine gegründet wurde. Mit ihrer künstlerischen Praxis greift R.E.P. eine Reihe von Themen auf, die symptomatisch für den aktuellen Zustand der ukrainischen Gesellschaft sind und stellt sie in eine globale Perspektive.

The New Ground Ensemble, priviously known as New Ground Performance, was created in 2020 out of the need for cultural cohesion in the face of social and political challenges. This was ultimately the key to the founding of the collective, which has developed into an international ensemble. Composed of as many artistic areas as possible, it follows the exploration of evolution and the human condition and its necessity. Interpersonal energies are channelled to create community.
Initiated by visual artist and musician Frank Campoi, the collaboration was initially based on digital collaborations with Johannes Frericks (visual artist & musician) and actress Julia Dorothee Brunsch (performance & vocals). Text fragments from Esther Leslie's ‘Synthetic Worlds’ formed the basis for a sound, text and image performance that combined experimental industrial sounds with words and images. Funding from the Erwin and Gisela Steiner Foundation and the Musikfonds enabled the purchase of equipment and the first physical rehearsals in the old Berlin Funkhaus in 2021. The ensemble expanded with Erla Svanlaug-Riedel (Live Image Design & Control), which celebrated its debut at the Delphi Theatre in Berlin in June 2022 and has since given numerous performances. The Californian musician Hazel Iris joined in 2023. The transformation to the New Ground Ensemble in 2024 marked the arrival of further artists: Esma and Murat Ertel (BaBa ZuLa) from Istanbul and Hans-Joachim Irmler (co-founder of the group Faust & Klangbad Festival).
The international cast and the fusion of different artistic disciplines emphasise the global relevance of the themes and the importance of cultural exchange, which lie at the heart of the ensemble idea. The performances are characterised by a multi-sensory experience in public space that channels interpersonal energies and creates community.
In 2025, Frank Campoi meets Kiev born artist Ksenia Hnylytska during an artist residency (Halle 6) in Munich. With a focus on performance and painting, she joins the New Ground Ensemble. Ksenia is part of the Ukrainian artist group Revolutionary Experimental Space (R.E.P.), which was founded in 2004 during the "Orange Revolution" in Ukraine. R.E.P.'s artistic practice addresses a number of themes that are symptomatic of the current state of Ukrainian society and places them in a global perspective.
